100% Norfolk

Norfolk & Norwich Festival and Rimini Protokoll in association with Norwich Theatre Royal
UK PREMIÈRE

A show about the population of Norfolk… starring the population of Norfolk

An illuminating and uplifting celebration of our county and our people, 100% Norfolk promises to be one of the highlight shows of the 2012 Festival.

We’re currently assembling a cast of 100 people from across Norfolk with the aim of making it as statistically representative as possible of the county’s total population of 862,000. For example, with 51% of the county’s population being female, we need to find 51 women and girls to take part. Other criteria will include age, location and place of birth.

Once assembled, the 100% Norfolk participants will then work with professional theatre director Emma Bernard to create a unique performance. Interweaving personal stories with revealing insights into what it’s like to live in Norfolk in 2012, 100% Norfolk is a must-see for anyone who loves the place they call home.

100% Norfolk is based on an ongoing project by Rimini Protokoll from Berlin, which has so far included 100% Berlin, 100% Vienna and 100% Vancouver. The company’s work draws on the views of “experts in daily life” to create contemporary and imaginative productions where everyday people are the theatre’s principal characters.

If you would be interested in taking part in 100% Norfolk, please contact Louise Dennison at the Festival office on 01603 877765 or 100percent@nnfestival.org.uk

Beethoven Symphony No 6 in F major, Op 68 ‘Pastoral’
Comprising some of the best young professional musicians from around the world, Spira mirabilis perform without a conductor in the spirit of an enlarged chamber group. The group has a particular affinity with Beethoven, here focusing on the much-loved 6th Symphony. The concert will be introduced from the stage, and the group will gather with the audience afterwards to answer questions about their unique style of music-making.

‘I have seen the future of orchestral music. And boy, is it good… Hearing them play Beethoven was like seeing an image through a telescope come magically into focus’ The Guardian

Effervescent, high-spirited, vocally brilliant, a work of comic genius: Rossini's masterpiece is a favourite with audiences around the world. ETO's new production, conducted by an experienced master of Italian opera, Paul McGrath, promises to be a real highlight. The roguish young Count Almaviva, masquerading as the student Lindoro, will be sung by Nicholas Sharratt, one of the UK's most promising Italianate tenors. Kitty Whately, winner of this year’s Kathleen Ferrier Award, plays his beloved Rosina, as cunning as she is lovely.

Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin (Wed 11)
With its heartfelt arias and ensembles, its splendid choruses and ballroom scenes, and Tchaikovsky's gift for melody, rich orchestration and drama, Eugene Onegin is a night at the opera for romantics of all ages.

Led by director Edward Hall, internationally acclaimed all-male company Propeller returns to Norwich following its triumphant productions of Richard III and The Comedy of Errors earlier in 2011. Its stagecraft, technical ability and theatricality result in dazzling productions which will move, delight and uplift you.

HENRY V
Thur & Sat 7.30pm, Fri 2pm
Henry V tells the tale of the greatest British warrior in English folklore. In a time when nationalism is at its most dangerous and exciting and increasing numbers of British servicemen and women are seeing active service, Propeller brings its own unique take on one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. Thrilling and deeply moving, Henry V marks the beginning of a journey that takes us from the corridors of Westminster to the fields of France in an evening of unforgettable power.

‘Played like a cross between Band Of Brothers (whose title was taken from this play) and an Iraq War movie, Henry V has the visceral impact of Mad Max.’
‘Visceral, intelligent and ironclad theatre, this isn’t just Shakespeare – this is rock and roll.’
Neil Norman, Daily Express *****

‘The air buzzes with a testosterone far more persuasive than mere actorly swagger.’
‘The heart soars and time flies.’
Dominic Maxwell, The Times****

‘a thrilling route march through the greatest of all war plays - you can touch the testosterone’
'the rigour of movement and speech is irresistible - the RSC seems flat-footed and thick of tongue in comparison’

The girls are back! One of BBC TV’s most popular and fondly-remembered sitcoms comes to the stage with all three of its original leading cast members, PAULINE QUIRKE, LINDA ROBSON and LESLEY JOSEPH.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER ran on BBC for nearly ten years throughout the 1990s becoming a massive hit right from the word go and remains not only a classic comedy but also, as a female-centred long-running series, a truly rare gem.

And now the three stars of the TV series are re-united on stage to re-create their adored characters, sisters Sharon Theodopolopoudos and Tracy Stubbs and their sex-mad neighbour, Dorien Green, in a brand-new show created especially for the theatre by The Comedy Theatre Company, producers of the highly-successful tour of Victoria Wood’s dinnerladies.

Music and dance come together in exquisite harmony in the choreography of Richard Alston. No other dance company places such emphasis on the importance of music and the deep magic it can conjure together with movement.

RADC’s programme features two brand new Alston pieces, to strikingly different music. A CEREMONY OF CAROLS is choreographed to Benjamin Britten’s masterpiece for boys’ voices and harp. The music is of magisterial simplicity, conjuring up a rich world of rapt and devout adoration; the dance is a celebration of a sheer surge of breath, a purestream of sound. The second new Alston piece is performed to Mozart’s achingly beautiful Piano Sonata No.15.

“Alston is the most musically revealing choreographer in
the world today”
New York Times.

The programme also includes a revival of Alston’s iconic ROUGHCUT,
probably his best-loved signature piece, and a defining classic of British
dance. It is performed to the shimmering peals of Steve Reich’s New
York & Electric Counterpoints for clarinet and guitar.

“A choreographer for whom every dance is a love affair with his
chosen music” The Times
Matthew Bourne's NUTCRACKER!

One of the most popular dance productions ever staged in the UK, Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker! returns to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

This delicious theatrical feast has family-sized helpings of Matthew Bourne’s trademark wit, pathos and magical fantasy. Nutcracker! follows Clara’s bittersweet journey from a hilariously bleak Christmas Eve at Dr. Dross’ Orphanage, through an ice-skating winter wonderland to the scrumptious candy kingdom of Sweetieland.

Tchaikovsky’s glorious score and Anthony Ward’s unforgettable sets and costumes combine with sizzling choreography to create a fresh and charmingly irreverent interpretation.

Matthew Bourne’s company New Adventures has produced some of the most successful dance productions of the last two decades including Swan Lake, The Car Man, Edward Scissorhands and last year’s sell-out hit, Cinderella.

**** “This radical rethinking of a classic ballet is like a sherbet lemon in a sea of seasonal treacle: sharp, smart and tangy on the tongue”

**** “Slicker and brighter than ever - Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker! is still an all-ages treat!”

**** “Bourne’s character sketches are as sharp as the costumes - a master caricaturist”

Sally Morgan, star of Sky LIVING’s Psychic Sally On The Road, returns for another phenomenal nationwide tour.
Sally’s live stage shows are completely unpredictable; no two shows are ever the same.

Although the show is extremely entertaining due to Sally’s warm and bubbly personality, the evening is about witnessing mediumship in its rawest form.

Observing how the spirit world can communicate with us from beyond the grave is an enlightening experience. Audiences have been left amazed as she delivers messages with astounding accuracy.

Often referred to as the “Psychic to the Stars”, Sally has read for many celebrities over the years including George Michael, Uma Thurman and more recently Alesha Dixon and The Only Way Is Essex heartthrob Mark Wright.

Tour of Duty
Multi award winning stand-up, television and movie star, Omid Djalili is back on tour with his brand new comedy show. A firm favourite at the Edinburgh Festival with his legendary performances, Omid’s stand-up awards include Time Out Award for Best Stand Up, the EMMA Award, South Bank Award nominee and Perrier Award nominee.

Omid was the winner of the Best Actor Award for his performance in The Infidel at the Turin Film Festival (won the previous year by Bill Murray). The Infidel also picked up a Loaded LAFTA award for Funniest Film and Omid was short listed for the Peter Sellers Award at the London Evening Standard British Film Awards.

"Right now, the Iranian Djalili is probably one of the most subversive, let alone funniest, comedians around." The Guardian

"To carve yourself out a career as the thinking person's Iranian comedian in this political climate takes a fine brain and a masterful way with the audience. There is no question that Omid Djalili possesses both" Sunday Times

Had Adès not had an epiphany in his teens that led to composing he may have chosen a career as a pianist and it is at the piano where we find him for the opening of this concert – a solo performance of Couperin’s kaleidoscopic and seductive Les barricades misterieuses. A French strand threads its way through the programme as Adès conducts works by Couperin, his own Three Studies on Couperin and Ravel’s tribute to the memory of the French master.

This compelling concert climaxes with Adès’ own Violin Concerto performed by mercurial Pekka Kuusisto. Subtitled Concentric Paths, each of the concerto’s three movements has its own circular design containing spiralling high jinks, shifting harmonic sands and other-worldly soundscapes.
