Junior Courses

The popular Junior Arts Courses are run on Saturdays. There are various class times and term fees according to age. Each term is of ten weeks. Students may rejoin each term and progress upwards through the course, year by year, from age 7 to 16.
The Course progresses through each academic year, following a detailed syllabus over the various year-groups. During the Autumn Term (September-November) and Spring Term (January to March) the course develops each year from physical theatre through improvisation techniques, acting skills, voice and movement to fully-scripted performance. The Summer Term (May-July) for those aged 8 and upwards is devoted to rehearsal of a full-scale musical production staged at the Theatre Royal or Norwich Playhouse for a week. Recent specially-written musicals include Robin Hood, Sinbad the Sailor, Dodger!, Peter Pan, the Search for the Lost Boys, and Hercules the Musical. There are also classes available in the Summer Term for those not wishing to take part in the musical production, while 7-year-olds present their own in-house performance at the end of the Summer Term.

Places on the Junior Courses are limited, and classes are arranged strictly according to age at 1st September, as with school year groups. There is a Waiting-List for places.

Summer School

For young people aged 9 – 16, the Theatre Royal Arts Course’s Summer School is a chance for young people to develop acting skills under professional tuition and direction, and to work together as a group, aiming towards presentation of a workshop performance at the end of the two-week course. Through theatre games, improvisation, role-play and scripted work, the students create their own performance. Using a mixture of improvisation and script, the group rehearses towards a staged performance, which will be presented on the final Saturday to an invited audience of parents and friends. The course encourages team-work, and all members of the group are encouraged to contribute their own particular skills towards making the show work. An ideal chance to create your own show during the Summer holidays.

The Summer School usually takes place over the first or second two weeks of the Summer holidays. The total course time is approximately 45 hours over two weeks.
Class times are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10.00am-1.00pm and 2.00-4.00pm, and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.00am-1.00pm. The final performance/presentation takes place on the second Saturday morning. The fee for the Summer School is £165.
