Alison Steadman Takes To Norwich Stage

03 February 10

Alison Steadman heads the cast of Enjoy which runs from March 22-27.

The play opened to the biggest advance of any Alan Bennett play in the West End and is now touring the country with the London cast.

Set in the playwright’s home town of Leeds, it follows an ageing couple who are living in the city’s last remaining back-to-back. As the homes around them are demolished, they are preparing to be housed in a state-of-the-art flat with all mod cons.

A sociologist comes to observe the couple – Wilf and Connie – as they prepare to leave their home turning their day-to-day lives upside down.

Alison Steadman is taking on the role of Connie which promises to be the latest in a long line of iconic parts for her. She is best known for playing the monstrous Beverly in Mike Leigh’s classic Abigail’s Party and won an Olivier Award for The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice. More recently, she has won critical acclaim for her role in the BBC’s comedy hit Gavin And Stacey.

Starring opposite her is David Troughton, who is a veteran of many landmark RSC and National Theatre productions. He is also no stranger to the small screen for his long-remembered role as Bob Buzzard in A Very Peculiar Practice and more recently in the BBC’s historical drama Casualty 1909.

John Bultitude, of Norwich Theatre Royal, said: “There is no doubt Enjoy is one of the most eagerly anticipated comedies to come here for some time. Alan Bennett’s fantastic writing coupled with performances from two of Britain’s finest performers will make this a really hot ticket.”
