The Pillowman
By Martin McDonagh
A viciously funny, seriously disturbing and pitch black comedy. A writer is interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a number of child-murders that are happening in his town. The good cop/bad cop antics of his interrogators mask a very dark undertone as the author is pressured into revealing the eventsof his own childhood that inspired his writing.
Martin McDonagh’s searingly brilliant play premièred at the National Theatre in 2003, and
won the 2004 Olivier Award for Best New Play.
“McDonagh’s invention of a new comedy-horror genre and his virtuoso technical skill leaves
most playwrights gasping.... For those with strong stomachs it’s horribly watchable”
Independent on Sunday
“An extraordinary play. Hauntingly, horribly entertaining”
Mail on Sunday
McDonagh’s plays and the award-winning film In Bruges have cemented his reputation as an artist unafraid to confront the darkest aspects of human behaviour, using his trademark mix of violence and humour. Please note the play contains scenes and language that may offend.
